Government's Budget Implementation Shows Deficit in First Five Months

Kathmandu: The implementation status of the budget for the current fiscal year 2080-81 BS (2023-24) reveals a deficit, with expenditures surpassing income. According to the Office of Auditor General's annual budgetary comparative analysis, the government's expenditure until December 16 of the current fiscal year exceeded its income. In the first five months of the fiscal year, income accounted for 26.07 percent of the annual target, while expenditures constituted 25.87 percent.

The total budget for the fiscal year is set at NPR 1,751.31 billion, and expenditures until mid-December reached around NPR 453 billion. Current expenditure represented 31.53 percent of the total spending, followed by 18.52 percent for fiscal management and 11.94 percent for capital expenditures.

The capital expenditure, with a budget of NPR 1,141.78 billion, recorded expenditures of NPR 359.99 billion, and the fiscal management allocation of NPR 300.07 billion saw expenditures of NPR 56.94 billion. The government aims to collect revenue totaling NPR 1,472 billion 484 million and 700 thousand in the current fiscal year.

Tax revenue collected in the first five months is NPR 337 billion 186 million and 700 thousand, representing 25.83 percent of the annual target. Non-tax revenue collection is NPR 26 billion 242 million and 500 thousand, constituting 22.42 percent of the annual target. The government has taken foreign loans amounting to NPR 2 billion 758 million until December 16. The deficit for the five-month period is over NPR 69 billion.
